Nielsen:

People don't read, they scan-look for headings
Credibility is important
Trying to find mathematical formula to quantify how much people read online
Back button used very often
Eye-tracking heat map
F-pattern for reading: horizontal then down and horizontal then vertically down-won't be read thoroughly, first two paragraphs must state what is contained in the rest of the reading, headers and bullet points need to contain important info

Navigation is important...non-linear allows to be read in any order
Meaningful titles for links
Consistent, persistent navigation bars
Place holder text in menus
Multiple navigation bars for large sites
No "back" and "forward" bars
Hierarchical navigation
Grouping similar pages together
