The S List

Ever seen the movie “Mean Girls”? Or possibly, a recent rap music video on MTV? Well if you have, hopefully you will understand what I’m trying to convey. Women in society today are expected to be some sort of plastic doll, and are looked upon as being “easy” or “worthless”. I mean sure, some people see the worth in women, but a lot of others still degrade women often. They will often use words like: slut, bitch, skank, and hoe lightly to “jokingly” describe women. Many people hold stakes in this issue. Seeing as about half the world is women, there are definitely certain people who care strongly about this subject. It’s not even just women who hold a stake in this issue either, some men care greatly as well.

Sexual harassment is one focus I will have in my hypertext because I have seen it everywhere I go. The other night, my guy friend was walking my girl friend home from a party and some older men were standing on the sidewalk, obviously looking her up and down. She asked them not to look at her in that way, and they said “Girl, I’m not looking at you, I’m looking at your ass!”. These instances are inexcusable and so many people are affected by them when they happen. Not only the girls who are harassed, but their loved ones, friends, the perpetrators, and bystanders.

My hypertext is going to be about the unrealistic expectations society holds for women, (i.e. being a size 0, being worthless except for cleaning and being a mother, or being less worthy than men), sexual harassment, and the overall image feminism holds in society today. I mean sure, I’ve even probably thought some of these things in the past, but it doesn’t mean I think it is acceptable or right. I hope that I can delve deeper into the different viewpoints of society on these topics in my hypertext.
