Topic Proposal
I am interested in tackling the questions on fairness have been posed throughout the book. The events in the story blur the line between what is considered fair and what is considered wrong and unjust. The people that blur this line are mostly people who work for the government, people who are supposedly masters and upholders of the law. For example, Marcus was tortured even if he was just a minor. Another example of the book's hazy concept of fairness is when the Severe Haircut Lady was released "scot free". Finally, the overall change of the citizen's privacy clearly redefined fairness in terms of what the citizens can keep private in their own lives. I would like to investigate the grounds in which such actions could still be considered fair even if they violated certain rights and constitutions. Is it still right to claim "greater good" even if your rights as an American citizen are being violated? Are the unlawful crimes being committed by people in office justified by the stake of national defense and security? Such questions will be raised and the idea of "fairness" will be analyzed from different possible viewpoints.
