Cory Doctorow suggests Emma Goldman, Anarchism, and Anarcho-feminism because of the role of women in the back such as the character Van and members of the "team". The idea of anarchy as a system without a constituted authority relates almost perfectly to the novel itself. Doctorow believes it is important because of the struggle against the state itself among the Anarcho-feminist world.
