The themes of Yippies, the FSM, and Punk rock are all tied into the novel through rebellion, specifically against the government. These things called for an uprising against the government, and that were generally anti-institutional. In the novel there is an illegal concert that shows many real life elements of the three themes. The leader of the bands is a punk rocker, and she calls for an end to the DHS controlling their lives. The concert itself can be related to the free speech movement in the fact that they are protesting against the government.
