topic proposal

for my research hypertext i would like to focus on the hard question of when does the authority of educational institutes go to far? in terms of the law. I probably have to rephrase the question a little. There are numerous cases including one going through the supreme court right now where a girl was strip searched because of a rumor circulating that she had pills on her, when in fact she didn't. The school gave her misinformation telling her that she was required under school policy to let the strip search happen while under the protection of the law a strip search requires a warrant. There are numerous examples of school overstepping their boundaries to protect the students, but how far is too far and how much do we value the privacy and safety of kids in the school system, both public and private. In the book Little Brother, privacy is completely compromised to increase security. I think that the author is not completely opposed to the increases in security but views it as an unhealthy balance. I agree with him in terms of security cannot over throw privacy to the point that it does in the book but I think i disagree with the acceptable amount of security. I think he would rather absolutely no security and the kids to be free to do what they want, or some variation of that. I think that schools, although it sucks when you're going through it, should be able to bend the rules a little bit, and alot of times i think they do. How much i think they should be able to bend the law is an issue i am not sure of. After all this is the safety of our kids and that outweighs privacy.
